The G2 road test is the first of Ontario’s two road tests, and it’s mostly about proving consistent, safe habits rather than any single tricky manoeuvre.
What it covers: basic vehicle control, intersections (stop signs, lights, four-way stops), lane changes, turns, parking manoeuvres, and general observation habits like shoulder checks and mirror use. See our graduated licensing guide for the full stage-by-stage breakdown.
Common reasons students don’t pass the first time:
- Rolling stops at stop signs instead of coming to a complete stop.
- Missing or late shoulder checks before lane changes.
- Hesitating too long at intersections, which can read as uncertain rather than cautious.
- Poor positioning in the lane, especially on turns.
How to prepare in the final weeks:
- Book a mock test with your instructor — our Confidence and Road Ready packages both include one.
- Practice the specific manoeuvres you’re least confident in, not just general driving.
- Drive the test route (or a similar one) if you can, so the environment itself isn’t a surprise.
- Get a full night’s sleep before test day — nervous exhaustion causes more small mistakes than lack of skill does.
On test day: bring valid ID, your G1 licence, and the test fee — confirm current requirements at ontario.ca before you go, since fees and documentation requirements can change.
