Driving Lessons in Old East Village

Old East Village is a mixed residential and commercial neighbourhood built along Dundas Street, one of London’s busier east-west routes. Lessons here involve a realistic mix of transit buses pulling in and out, cyclists sharing the road, and pedestrians moving between shops — good practice for the kind of scanning habits that quieter suburbs don’t force you to build.

Hamilton Road and the streets branching off Dundas also introduce four-way stops without the benefit of a roundabout or traffic light, so we spend real time here on right-of-way judgment: who stops first, who actually has to wait, and how to communicate intent with hesitant drivers who aren’t sure either.

Because the neighbourhood is older, some side streets are narrower than newer subdivisions, with less room to correct a bad line into a turn. In winter, narrower streets plus street parking means less room to manoeuvre, so we treat this as a step up from wide-laned suburban practice.
