Richmond Row is downtown London’s entertainment and shopping strip, and it demands a different kind of attention than most of our other neighbourhood lessons. Streets are narrow, parking is tight, and pedestrian and cyclist volume is high throughout the day and especially in the evenings and on weekends. Slow, predictable driving matters more here than anywhere else on our list — this is not a place to practice building speed.
Because downtown streets were laid out long before modern traffic volumes, lane markings can be less generous than in newer parts of the city, and on-street parking (plus the occasional delivery truck double-parked) narrows the usable road further. We treat Richmond Row as a good test of a student’s hazard awareness once they’ve built confidence elsewhere — spotting a pedestrian about to step out, or a cyclist filtering past on the right, before it becomes a problem.
In winter, downtown plowing tends to prioritize main routes over side streets, so students should expect narrower, sometimes rutted lanes on side streets near Richmond Row during and after a snowfall.
