Ontario’s graduated licensing system has two learning levels and two road tests. For the full visual walkthrough, see our Learn to Drive guide.

  • G1: Pass a vision test and a knowledge test (signs and rules of the road) at a DriveTest centre. You must be at least 16.
  • G1 holding period: Normally 12 months before your first road test (the G2 road test). An approved driver-education course can shorten this to 8 months.
  • G2: After passing the G2 road test, hold a G2 licence for at least 12 months before the final G road test.
  • G road test: Covers more advanced skills such as highway driving. At full-time DriveTest centres it does not re-test skills already covered on the G2 test (parallel parking, roadside stops, three-point turns, residential driving).
  • Total time: At least 20 months from G1 to full G licence. You have up to 5 years to complete the whole process, or you must start over.

Always confirm current requirements at ontario.ca or a ServiceOntario centre before booking a test.
