Right-of-Way Rules

This page is not official Ministry of Transportation (MTO) material and may not reflect the latest rules. Always confirm current requirements at ontario.ca or with a ServiceOntario centre before relying on it.

Right-of-way is given by other drivers, not taken — the rules just tell you who should yield:

  • Four-way stops: The driver who stops first goes first. If two vehicles stop at the same time, the driver on the right goes first.
  • Roundabouts: Yield to traffic already in the roundabout before entering. Signal when exiting. London has several multi-lane roundabouts (see our neighbourhood pages) where lane choice on entry matters as much as yielding.
  • Pedestrian crossings: Drivers must stop and remain stopped for pedestrians in a crosswalk, including at school crossings and pedestrian-activated crossovers.
  • School buses: You must stop for a school bus with its upper red lights flashing, on both undivided roads (both directions) and when following or meeting it — unless the road is physically divided by a median.

These are general summaries — read the full “Sharing the Road” chapter of the Driver’s Handbook for exact wording and exceptions.
