Unless a sign says otherwise, speed limits in Ontario are generally 50 km/h in cities and towns and vary by posted sign elsewhere (rural roads, highways, and construction zones each have their own posted limits). Always follow the posted sign over any general assumption.
Common moving offences for new drivers to know:
- Speeding, including in community safety zones and construction zones, where penalties are often higher.
- Careless and stunt driving, which can carry an immediate licence suspension and vehicle impoundment.
- Distracted driving (using a hand-held device while driving), which carries its own penalty schedule — see our impaired and distracted driving page.
- Following too closely, improper lane changes, and failing to yield.
Each conviction can also add demerit points to your licence — see Demerit Points and Your Driver Record for how that works, especially as a novice (G1/G2) driver. Confirm current fines and penalties at ontario.ca.
